Baton Rouge, LA -- (Sports Network) - The seventh-ranked LSU Tigers are the defending national champs, and they will begin the 2008 season by hosting the always dangerous Appalachian State Mountaineers.

College football fans undoubtedly remember Appalachian State's shocking victory over Michigan to open the 2007 campaign. The Mountaineers compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly know as Division I-AA, and they have won the last three national titles at that level. They begin this new season ranked first in the Sports Network's preseason FCS poll for the third straight year, and they have played 42 consecutive games as a nationally-ranked club.....Read story

History




Appalachian State University began in 1899 when a group of citizens in Watauga County, under the leadership of Blanford B. Dougherty and his brother Dauphin D. Dougherty, began a movement to educate teachers in Northwest North Carolina. Land was donated by Daniel B. Dougherty, father of the leaders in the enterprise, and by J. F. Hardin. On this site a wood frame building, costing $1,000, was erected by contributions from citizens of the town and county. In the fall of 1899, the Dougherty brothers, acting as co-principals, began the school which was named Watauga Academy. The first year saw 53 students enrolled in three grades....Read more
